Most Cypriot homes have a wall-mounted split unit in nearly every room, cooling from May to October and, in many flats and houses, heating through the winter too. Eurostat figures show that 16% of household energy in Cyprus went on space cooling in 2024, the highest share in the EU. All those running hours pull dust, pet hair and cooking grease into the filters, which means weaker airflow, higher bills and, sooner or later, a musty smell.
Cleaning the filters yourself is a quick job. Here is how and when to do it, what manufacturers tell you never to do, and where a cleaner's work ends and an air-conditioning technician's begins.
Key takeaways
- Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and LG recommend cleaning split unit filters about every two weeks while the unit is in regular use.
- Switch off at the breaker, wash mesh filters in lukewarm water with mild detergent, and dry them fully in the shade.
- Never spray water or cleaners into the unit. Manufacturers warn of leaks, damage to plastic parts and fire.
- Coil and drain cleaning is technician work, and refrigerant work legally needs certified personnel.

Why air conditioners in Cyprus get dirty so fast
They run for most of the year in warm, dusty air, and Cypriot homes give them plenty to catch:
- Dust episodes. On 2 February 2026, PM10 readings in Paphos, Limassol and elsewhere reached about ten times the daily limit of 50 µg/m³. Our dust storm cleaning guide covers the rest of the house.
- Pets and cooking. Pet hair mats mesh filters, and units near the kitchen pull in grease that turns dust sticky.
- Sea air. Mitsubishi Electric lists salty seaside locations among the places to avoid installing a unit, yet plenty of outdoor units in Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa face the sea.
- Long idle spells. Holiday homes shut for months collect dust, and moisture left inside a unit gives mould a head start.
Dirty filters cost more than airflow: Mitsubishi Electric notes that they cause condensation inside the unit, which contributes to mould growth.
How often to clean AC filters
Every two weeks while the unit is in regular use. That is the interval in Daikin's FTXM user guide, Mitsubishi Electric's MSZ-HJ operating instructions and LG's filter guidance. If your unit shows a filter reminder, clean when it appears, and check your own manual, as some models differ. Treat the calendar below as a minimum.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| April or May | Clean all filters, wipe the panels and check the outdoor unit is clear |
| June to September | Clean every two weeks in rooms you use daily |
| After a dust episode | Clean filters once you have dusted the house |
| October or November | Clean before you switch to heat mode |
| Every year or so | Book a technician service for the coil and drain |
How to clean a split unit filter, step by step
You need a stable stepladder, a vacuum with a brush attachment, lukewarm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft cloth.
Switch off at the breaker
Turn the unit off, then switch off its breaker or isolator. Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric both say to cut the power before cleaning.
Open the front panel
Lift it from both sides until it clicks or stays open.
Remove the filters
Push the centre tab and pull each filter down and out. Check the manual before wetting any deodorising or fine-dust inserts, as some must stay dry.
Vacuum
Vacuum the dusty side with the brush attachment. Light dust may need nothing more.
Wash in lukewarm water
Soak grimy filters for 10 to 15 minutes in lukewarm water with a little detergent, then rinse. Daikin warns that water at 40°C or above can discolour and deform parts.
Dry in the shade
Shake off the water without wringing and let the filters dry completely in the shade. Mitsubishi Electric warns against drying parts in direct sunlight, so a July balcony is out.
Wipe the panel and vanes
Wipe the panel, casing and louvres with a damp cloth. Don't force the vanes by hand: both brands warn this can damage the mechanism.
Refit and test
Refit the dry filters, close the panel, restore the power and check the airflow.
What not to do
Keep water, heat and chemicals away from the inside of the unit.
- Don't spray or rinse water into the indoor unit. Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric both cite the risk of electric shock or fire.
- Don't use petrol, benzene, thinners, polishing powder or insecticide.
- Don't use hot water or a hairdryer. Daikin's limit is below 40°C.
- Don't touch the aluminium fins. They are sharp, and bent fins block airflow.
- Don't use aerosols near the unit. Daikin warns that sprays near its R32 units can cause a fire.
Are coil and foam cleaner sprays worth it?
Generally not. Mitsubishi Electric says owners should never wash the inside of the indoor unit: unsuitable detergent can damage the plastic inside and cause leaks, and detergent on the electrics or motor can cause a malfunction, smoke or fire.
- Upside: foam can lift light dust from the front of the coil.
- Downside: it can't reach the fan or drain tray, where smells often start.
- Downside: dirty run-off can overflow a part-blocked drain tray and run down the wall.
- Downside: some professional coil cleaners are made for outdoor condenser coils and labelled for trained personnel only.
Looking after the outdoor unit
Keep it clear and leave the coil to a technician.
- Remove leaves, bags and nesting material from around and on top of it.
- Keep the gaps the installer left. Mitsubishi Electric lists a blocked air outlet as a condition to avoid.
- Don't pressure-wash it: the thin aluminium fins bend flat and block airflow.
- On the coast, point out any white crust or corrosion at the next service.
Signs you need a technician
Call an air-conditioning technician if any of these persist after a filter clean:
- A musty smell on start-up (units can also re-release room smells such as smoke, which Daikin says is normal)
- Water dripping indoors, usually from a blocked drain tray or hose
- Ice on the pipes or coil
- Weak airflow, or poor cooling or heating (Mitsubishi Electric says a unit that won't cool or heat may have a refrigerant leak)
- Grinding, rattling or squealing (Daikin lists ticking, clicking and water-flow sounds as normal)
- An error code, or any burning smell: switch off at the breaker and call
What a professional AC service covers
Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric both recommend periodic specialist maintenance, because dirt builds up inside the unit over several seasons. The Cyprus Consumers Association agrees: filters are your job, while deep cleaning of the indoor and outdoor units belongs with a refrigeration technician. A service typically covers the indoor coil and fan, the drain tray and hose, the outdoor coil and a performance check. Ask for a written quote that lists what is included and whether the price is per unit.
Smells, mould and your health
A musty smell usually means dirt and damp inside the unit. UK government guidance says damp and mould mainly affect the airways and lungs, with higher risk for people with asthma, allergies, COPD or weakened immunity, and for children and older people. Our guide to mould in Cyprus homes covers walls and ceilings.
Before a long break, dry the unit out: Daikin suggests several hours in fan-only mode, and Mitsubishi Electric three to four hours of cooling at the highest set temperature.
Holiday homes and rentals
Units in holiday homes in Paphos, Ayia Napa, Protaras or Limassol sit idle for months, then run flat out. Before the first guests, clean the filters, wipe the vanes and run each unit for a few minutes to catch smells or drips while there is still time to call a technician. Cleaners offering holiday rental cleaning can add filters to the turnover list, and they belong in any end of tenancy clean too.
Getting a cleaner to help
A housekeeper can wash removable filters, wipe covers and vanes, and clear debris around a safely reachable outdoor unit, which fits neatly into a deep clean before summer. Opening the casing, cleaning the coil or drain, and anything involving refrigerant is technician work.
| Job | Cleaner | Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Wash filters, wipe casing and vanes | Yes | Yes |
| Clean the indoor coil, fan and drain | No | Yes |
| Leak checks, re-gassing, repairs | No | Certified only |
Listed hourly rates on Cyprus Cleaners typically run from €9 to €16, with one-off deep cleans from about €120 (see our cleaner cost guide). Browse cleaners in Limassol, where around 36 are listed, or in Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca, and mention AC filters when you get in touch.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean my air conditioner filter?
About every two weeks while the unit is in regular use, which is what Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and LG recommend. In Cyprus that means fortnightly from June to September, plus a clean before summer, before switching to heating and after a dust episode. Check your model's manual for its exact interval.
Can I wash AC filters with water?
Yes. Standard mesh filters can be vacuumed, then washed in lukewarm water below 40°C with a little mild detergent. Shake off the water without wringing and let them dry completely in the shade before refitting. Some deodorising or fine-dust inserts must not get wet, so check the manual first.
Why does my air conditioner smell musty?
Usually because dirt and damp inside the unit, on the coil, fan or drain tray, are letting mould grow. Clean the filters first. If the smell remains after a day or two of use, book an air-conditioning technician to clean the coil and drain, since sprays rarely reach the source.
Is it safe to use an AC coil cleaner spray?
Manufacturers advise against it. Mitsubishi Electric says owners should never wash the inside of the indoor unit, because unsuitable detergent can damage plastic parts and cause leaks, and detergent on electrical parts can cause a malfunction, smoke or fire. Daikin warns against using sprays near its R32 units.
How much does AC cleaning cost in Cyprus?
Cleaning the filters yourself costs next to nothing. If a cleaner does it during a visit, you pay their hourly rate, typically 9 to 16 euros on Cyprus Cleaners. A technician's service is priced separately, so get two or three written quotes that list what is included and whether the price is per unit.
Can a house cleaner clean my air conditioner?
A house cleaner can wash removable filters, wipe the panel, casing and vanes, and clear debris around a safely reachable outdoor unit. Opening the unit, cleaning the coil or drain line, and anything involving refrigerant needs an air-conditioning technician, and refrigerant work legally requires certified personnel under EU rules.
